What is finasteride?
Finasteride is a medication that is given orally for the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia (AA). It is an approved treatment by the US Food and Drug Administration and is prescribed by qualified dermatologists worldwide.
For several years now, finasteride has been used by a large percentage of patients and has been shown to be safe. It has excellent results in the treatment of AA in men of all ages and ethnicities.
Finasteride was originally developed for the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy for which it is still administered today with good results. After observing the success of finasteride in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy, scientists then studied its use in the treatment of alopecia, after observing that patients receiving finasteride had increased head hair growth.
Is finasteride suitable for both sexes?
Finasteride is not recommended for use by women when they are of childbearing age.
What effect can finasteride have?
In both early and intermediate stages of androgenetic alopecia hair loss, finasteride has been shown to be effective in combating it. However, for men who have fairly extensive alopecia, no new hair growth will occur if finasteride is taken. In specific cases in which the patient wishes to stimulate new hair growth, Hair Transplantation is recommended. Hair Transplant specialists can prescribe finasteride to the patient in order to prevent further hair loss in the back of the head. In addition, they perform Hair Transplantation to fill in the gaps in the front line of the scalp, the areas where finasteride is not as effective.
Where on the scalp is finasteride most effective?
According to a large number of studies and scientific publications, finasteride is most effective in stimulating new hair growth at the top of the scalp. It is less active in the front of the head (hair line), where hair loss is usually called “temple hair loss”.
