What is hair loss?

Hair loss is the fall of hair from a man’s scalp. The condition is divided into different forms, among which are:

-Physiological Hair Loss: There is loss of about 50-100 hairs per day, which have gone through their life cycle.

-Age-related Hair Loss: There is a 10% reduction in density between the ages of 40 and 50, due to a reduction in the number of active hair follicles.

-Seasonal Hair Loss: Refers to the seasonal increase in normal hair loss, mainly in early autumn.

What is male pattern hair loss?

Hair loss is the main symptom of alopecia, which is divided into androgenetic alopecia,  alopecia areata, scarring alopecia and diffuse alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss, accounting for 95% of male hair loss cases.

Causes of male pattern hair loss

Causes of male pattern hair loss include chronic or skin conditions, side effects of medications and stress. Seasonality, modern lifestyle, and heredity are noted as frequent factors in its occurrence.

Nowadays, modern and specialized genetic tests can determine the degree of a man’s predisposition to alopecia.

Symptoms of male pattern hair loss

The most common of the symptoms indicating the existence of male pattern hair loss is the obvious reduction in density in the scalp. The patient notices the presence of many hairs in various places, such as the brush, the bath or the pillow. Of note is the absence of replacement of the lost hair, as normally occurs.

Diagnosis of male pattern hair loss

The diagnosis of male pattern hair loss is made by a qualified dermatologist by clinical examination, analysis of the patient’s history and trichoscopy. The doctor considers possible complications from medication, as well as hereditary factors.

At the same time, the modern and most appropriate examination using a special camera and software is used. The modern and advanced diagnostic tools can now provide a diagnosis of a man’s genetic predisposition.

Stress and hair loss are correlated, and three specific types of hair loss are caused by increased levels of stress in the body: diffuse alopecia, alopecia areata and trichotillomania.

Treatment of male pattern hair loss

The treatment of male pattern hair loss is carried out by the specialized dermatologist, Dr. Apostolos Karalexis, based on the needs of the patient. When hair loss is due to reversible factors, such as hormonal imbalances, conservative treatment with medication is followed.

In more advanced stages, when thinning or severe baldness is present, surgical treatment of the condition is recommended. More specifically, an individualised diagnosis is made and the appropriate treatment technique is proposed.

The appropriate treatment techniques for hair transplantation include:

-FUE hair transplantation

-Hair transplantation – Power FUE hair transplantation

-Hair transplantation Power FUT Hair transplantation
